Prahlad Thakur Residency: Bunglow

The design style of the bunglow is a blend of architectural styles, a modern interpretation of traditional Indian design. The use of red laterite stone cladding and the overall massing of the building is a nod to traditional Indian architecture, however, the use of glass windows and flat roof are hallmarks of modern architecture, this fusion creates a unique and harmonious aesthetic. Designed for a painting artist, where the architecture itself becomes a canvas and the interplay of textures, colors, and volumes creates a visually stimulating environment that can inspire creativity. The design stands out from typical suburban houses, making a statement about the client’s individuality and artistic vision.

The prominent use of red laterite stone, a natural material is a way to connect the bunglow to the client’s cultural heritage and the use of glass windows and a flat roof, on the other hand are modern features that reflect the client’s appreciation for contemporary design. The large windows and skylights allow ample amount of natural light into the space. For site landscaping, a variety of plants and trees area added to create a sense of tranquility and peace.

The bunglow is planned in a way that a spacious living room, mandir, kitchen + dining and 2 bedrooms with attached toilet are proposed in the Ground floor and second floor consists of a central courtyard open to skylight, artist’s room with waiting area and 2 bedrooms with attached toilet.

Ground floor: The most prominent feature, continuing the exterior cladding material into the interior, the entrance immediately establishes a warm and inviting atmosphere through the use of natural wood along with stone finishes. This material palette continues into the living area, where earthy tones like browns, beiges, and grays create a cozy and grounding ambiance. The laquer finish walls enhances the natural colour and texture of the stone while the Intricate carvings on furniture pieces, such as the coffee table and window frames, celebrate Indian craftsmanship and add a touch of elegance. Within a uniquely designed bungalow, lies the mandir that embodies the essence of traditional Indian artistry and spiritual devotion. Positioned strategically in front of a window, the mandir maximizes natural light while adhering to Vastu principles by maintaining an east-west orientation. The most striking feature of the mandir is its intricately carved wooden structure, showcasing exquisite patterns and motifs.

Bedrooms: The use of wood in the door, bedside tables, and the bed legs adds warmth and complements natural stone, while the soft textiles create cozy and comfortable space perfect for bedroom. The decorative pieces and other personal touches add character and reflect the indivisual client’s style.

First floor: This floor offers a contemporary take on the bunglow’s overall design theme. The multi-functional space in the first floor is planned to have windows on all the sides for abundant natural lighting as it serves as a studio for showcasing the artist’s work and inspirations along with his working corner desk. The neutral hues of the walls provide clean backdrop for displaying the artwork. The textured ceiling is continued here with track light system providing ample and adjustable light for both functional illumination and highlighting the artworks. The storage boxes are also provided against the wall without cluttering the space and providing ample storage. The bedrooms in this floor are given a more contemporary feel with white hues for walls and pastel shaded upholstered bed and headboard adding a touch of comfort and luxury. Flooring and Ceiling is continued in same finishes maintaining continuity of theme throughout the house. This design variation adds depth and complexity to the overall narrative of the home.
